Why ingrown hairs develop

- the face and neck
- underarms

The NHS advises against scratching, picking or squeezing ingrown hairs because this can damage the skin and increase the risk of infection.
Shaving habits that may contribute to irritation
Shaving too closely, using a blunt razor or repeatedly passing the blade over the same area can make irritation more likely. Tight clothing may also rub areas such as the bikini line and contribute to inflammation around the follicles.
Simple changes may help, including:
- softening the skin with warm water before shaving
- using a suitable shaving gel
- shaving in the direction of hair growth
- using as few razor strokes as possible
- avoiding daily shaving where practical
- applying a cool, clean cloth afterwards

Laser hair reduction uses controlled light energy that is absorbed by pigment within the hair. The energy is converted into heat and directed towards the follicle, reducing its ability to produce future hair growth.

Why it may help with recurring ingrown hairs
Laser treatment does not directly remove an inflamed ingrown hair. Instead, the aim is to reduce future hair growth. As treated hairs become fewer or finer, there may be less opportunity for coarse hairs to curl back into the skin after shaving.

Preparing for laser hair reduction
You will normally be advised not to wax, tweeze or epilate before treatment because the hair follicle needs to remain present for the laser to target it. The area may instead need to be shaved according to the instructions provided by your practitioner.
You should also disclose:
- recent sun exposure or tanning
- changes to medication
- active skin conditions
- any infection or broken skin in the area
- previous reactions to laser or light-based treatments
Treatment should be postponed if the skin is not suitable on the day.
Aftercare and normal skin responses
Temporary redness, warmth or slight swelling around the follicles may occur after laser hair reduction. Cooling and appropriate device settings help protect the skin, but there remains a risk of pigment changes, blistering or other skin reactions, particularly when preparation and aftercare instructions are not followed.
