Thread & Spider Vein Removal

How Do We Treat Thread And Spider Veins On The Face And Legs?
At Hemel Cosmetic Clinic we blend the techniques of time honoured injection sclerotherapy with the modern method of treating finer veins with thermo-coagulation sometimes referred to as Veinwave. The combination of these treatments provides the ultimate cosmetic result for troublesome spider veins on the legs. On the face the veins are divided into those that surround the nose, and go into the nose and the veins that are associated with rosacea. Years of experience in our clinic have shown that veins of all sizes can be treated with confidence using thermo-coagulation (Veinwave) alone. Our fantastic results are incredibly satisfying for patients and the treatment is ‘walk-in walk-out’. Minor Vascular blemishes such as Spider Naevi and small angiomas can be treated safely and effectively in seconds.

Veinwave (Thermocoagulation)

A technique where microwaves destroy the thread veins quickly without scarring and without hyper or hypo pigmentation changes. Thermo-coagulation is far more successful in the treatment of thread veins than laser therapy; indeed a high percentage of patients seek our medical expertise as a result of failed laser treatment.

Do Veins Disappear Straight Away?

After the first treatment, especially on the legs, the veins may appear worse up the next treatment/review 4 weeks later. This worsening effect, that does not occur for everyone and is the debris from the dead vein walls waiting to be resorbed by the body.

Much more improvement in appearance is seen after the second treatment on the legs.

The average number of treatments on the legs in 3 treatment sessions.

The face tends to respond faster than the legs in that the appearance tends to be much more improved after the first treatment.

The average number of treatments for the face and nose is 2 treatment sessions.

Is This Laser Treatment?

No. Veinwave is thermo-coagulation and works in a similar way to a microwave. Laser treatment is not particularly beneficial to leg veins and many face veins, especially those located around the nose.

Laser treatment failed – will this treatment work?

Yes

Why Do We Get Thread Veins?

The exact causes of thread veins are not known but along with hereditary factors it is thought heat, alcohol and hormonal changes act as a trigger.

Is Treatment Safe?

Yes. The microwaves penetrate the tissue approximately 0.5mm – 2mm at the most, which does not have any adverse effects. The safety of our patients is our first priority and we comply with strict regulations and Government legislation in order to operate. All of our practitioners are fully trained.

Can I expect scarring or pigmentation changes?

No. When administered properly Veinwave does not scar and will not cause hypo or hyperpigmentation. If you are anxious about the possibility of scarring, ask your practitioner to do a skin test for you so you can see the results yourself.

Can I go straight out in the sun post treatment?

Yes, there is no reason why not. One should of course apply the requisite skin protection of a nature which is unlikely to aggravate sensitive skin.

Can I have Veinwave carried immediately after my consultation?

Yes, once you have completed the consultation and your practitioner is satisfied that you are suitable for treatment then normally this can be done on the same day.

Can I wear makeup straight after treatment?

Yes – no problem at all.

Can Veinwave be used to treat Rosacea?

In the UK, and throughout Europe, Veinwave has been successfully used to treat the facial veins associated with Rosacea. Rosacea itself is a medical condition which may require alternative treatment as prescribed by ones own Doctor.

Do I need a consultation?

Generally speaking, yes. The consultation is very important in diagnosing your condition and in determining the appropriate medical procedure to apply. You should always insist that your practitioner properly consults with you prior to any treatment, not only veinwave. Beware that in many cosmetic clinics, salon personnel or sales people will talk to you in the first instance – this is NOT a medical consultation, but more likely to be a sales pitch. There are often contra-indications with regard to most treatments hence a full assessment should be conducted prior to treatment.

Do the veins disappear immediately?

Yes – you will see the veins instantly disappearing during the treatment.

Does it hurt?

The word ‘hurt’ is wholly subjective. Most people who have previously suffered the trauma of a laser treatment see Veinwave as a relatively pain free alternative. There are of course those who have very low pain thresholds and will feel the treatment more than others. It also does depend on the part of the body being treated. Veinwave can be used to treat intra-nasal veins, possibly the most sensitive part of your body, but yet still in relative comfort, causing no more than a watery eye. Veinwave, at its worst, has been described as causing a minor and instantaneous stinging sensation which doesn’t linger – some liken it to plucking a hair. To put this into context, we do not recommend nor see it as necessary for our practitioners to use any form of anaesthesia whatsoever – compare that with some treatments where legs have to be effectively frozen in advance to quell the pain!

Does veinwave work on dark skin?

Veinwave has been proven to work well on all skin types but a consultation is always required to assess suitability.

Sclerotherapy

It is estimated that one in four women, and an unknown number of men, suffer from thread veins of the legs. Thread veins of the legs are often called “spider veins”, “broken capillaries”, “broken veins” or “venous flares”.

On smaller finer veins on the face and legs, at Hemel Cosmetic Clinic, we use the latest technology known as Veinwave. The medical method used to treat larger thread and spider veins on the legs at Hemel Cosmetic Clinic is known as Sclerotherapy.

How does Sclerotherapy work?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose veins and spider veins. During sclerotherapy, the medical cosmetic practitioner injects a solution directly into the affected vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to swell and stick together. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view. Sclerotherapy is a well-proven procedure and has been used since the 1930s.

Before hand the treatment area is cleansed. The small injections deliver the sclerotherapy solution directly into the vein vessel, using very fine needles. The number of veins injected in one session is variable, depending on the number, size and location of the veins.

At Hemel Cosmetic Clinic Sclerotherapy is used to remove spider and thread veins from the legs only.

Am I suitable for Sclerotherapy treatment?

Before the procedure, you will have an initial consultation with a medical cosmetic practitioner who will evaluate your suitability for sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy works well for most patients. It is estimated that as many as 50 percent to 80 percent of injected veins may be eliminated with each injection session. A few (less than 10 percent) of the people who have sclerotherapy do not respond to the injections at all. In these instances, different solutions or a different method, such as laser therapy, may be tried.

You are not eligible for sclerotherapy if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or are bedridden. You must wait at least three months after delivery before you can be considered for this procedure. You can have sclerotherapy if you take birth control pills. If you have had a blood clot in the past, your eligibility will be determined on an individual basis, and will depend on the extremity and the cause of the clot.

In general, spider veins respond to treatment in 4 to 12 weeks, and larger veins respond in 3 to 4 months. If the veins respond to the treatment, usually they will not reappear. However, new veins may appear over time. If needed, you may return for further injections.

Who will perform my Sclerotherapy treatment?

The treatment will be carried out by Kevin Loughlin D.C., BSc (Hons), BSc (Chiro), RGN, a Medically Certified Cosmetic Practitioner. He has over 22 years experience working in both the NHS and Private Practice.

Kevin has the relevant training and experience required to ensure that you receive the very best of care and attention. As well as administering treatments, he is also highly qualified to advise on what is the most appropriate treatment plan for each of his patients.

We offer free, no obligation consultations. This is an opportunity for us to learn more about what you want to achieve and for you to ask any questions you may have. As well as talking you through your treatment options, we will give you more information on the treatment process and what you can expect as a patient of the Hemel Cosmetic Clinic.

How long does the Sclerotherapy procedure take?

Treatment may last from 20-60 minutes, depending on the number and extent of veins to be treated. For an initial consultation extra time will be added in order to conduct a full medical history and examination.

What is the down time after Sclerotherapy treatment?

After the treatment you will be able to drive yourself home. You may resume your regular activities and are encouraged to walk.

You will be instructed to wear support hosiery or compression wraps to ¡§compress¡¨ the treated vessels.

For 48 hours after the procedure, please follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Do not take hot baths or sit in a whirlpool or sauna. You may take showers, but the water should be cooler than usual.
  • Wash the injection sites with a mild soap and lukewarm water.
  • Do not apply hot compresses or any form of heat to the injected areas.
  • Avoid direct exposure to sunlight (including sun tanning and tanning beds).
Does Sclerotherapy treatment hurt?

Mild discomfort may occur when the veins are injected.

Who is not suitable for Sclerotherapy treatment?

You are not eligible for sclerotherapy treatment if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or are bedridden. You must wait at least three months after delivery before you can be considered for this procedure. You can have sclerotherapy if you take birth control pills. If you have had a blood clot in the past, your eligibility will be determined on an individual basis, and will depend on the extremity and the cause of the clot.

Is treatment safe and are there any side effects with Sclerotherapy?

Side effects of sclerotherapy may include:

  • Larger injected veins may become lumpy or hard for several months before resolving.
  • Raised, red areas may appear at the injection sites and should disappear within a few days.
  • Brown lines or spots on the skin may be noted at the site of the injection, possibly caused by a form of iron that escapes from the blood in the injected veins. In most cases, they disappear within 3 to 6 months, but can be permanent about 5 percent of the time.
  • Bruising may occur around the injection site and can last several days or weeks.
  • Temporary tiny blood vessels may develop at the treated area. This is called revascularization, flares, mats or blushing. They may appear days or weeks
after the procedure but should fade within a few months and usually do not require further treatment.
  • Allergic reactions to the sclerosing agent may occur at the time of the injection and are rarely serious. Symptoms include itching and swelling.
  • Other side effects rarely develop after sclerotherapy.

If you have any of these rare side effects, please contact your physician immediately:

  • Inflammation within five inches of the groin
  • Sudden onset of a swollen leg
  • Rarely formation of small ulcers at the injection site
  • Red streaking, especially in the groin area
